There used to be eight shops that specialized in selling silk fabric around the Qianmen area, referred to as "Qianmen Ba Da Xiang (because each had the Chinese character "Xiang" in its name)," all of which were built during Emperor Tongzhi's reign and operated by the Meng Family.
In the beginning, there were only two shops: Ruilinxiang and Qiangxiangyi, specializing in selling silk brocades and handspun cloth. Later, Ruishengxiang opened at the south end of Damochang Road. In the early years of Emperor Guangxu's reign (about 1875), another three shops were opened in succession.
According to historical records, Ruifuxiang Silk Shop was built in the 19th year of Guangxu's reign (1893) in Dazhalan. In 1900, all of Dazhalan was burned down, including Ruifuxiang, which was rebuilt with investment from Meng Jin.
