A senior Jordanian official said that Jordan has reduced illiteracy from 45 percent in 1970 to 7.9 percent in 2008, 11.6 percent of whom are females, local daily the Jordan Times reported Friday.

Mohammad Okour, managing director of general education and students affairs at the Education Ministry, revealed the percentage while inaugurating a project to eradicate illiteracy in Madaba, about 48 kms southwest of the capital Amman, according to the daily.

Jordan's illiteracy is expected to be decreased to five percent by the year 2015, Okour was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Jordanian Minister of Education Tayseer Nueimi said that the country is one of the advanced countries in terms of education, with 99 percent enrolled in elementary education and 84percent in secondary schools.

The ministry's 2007-2008 statistics indicated that there are 500 illiteracy eradication centers in Jordan, 473 of them for women.
