Around 510,000 Cameroonians have been found suffering from HIV/AIDS, according to the Health Ministry of the West African country.
The patients include 90,000 who have fallen ill and 55,000 who have just been registered at hospital.
The figure was released on Monday when Health Minister Andre Mama Fouda launched a week-long campaign against HIV/AIDS.
The minister encouraged patients to report at hospital, saying the government "has taken an important measure since May 2007 to offer free anti-virus drugs."
Fouda called on women to take the frontlines in the struggle against the disease, citing figures showing that 6.5 percent of the female are exposed to HIV/AIDS, compared with 4.5 percent for the male.
"We should not only continue to assume duty to people around us, but ensure that this pandemic disease will make no progress in our country," the minister added.
Cameroon has worked out a plan for 2009 under which it will push ahead with professional training to improve the distribution of anti-virus drugs across the country.
