Senegalese writer Birame Ndeck Ndiaye has been awarded Africa's poetry prize for publishing popular poems and songs in 2008.
Ndiaye was crowned the 2008 prize of the African House of International Poetry (MAPI) at the 6th international poetry meeting opened here on Monday evening.
At the opening ceremony, the Senegalese laureate received the MAPI prize of a trophy and a bonus from Minister of State Serigne Diop.
Ndiaye entered the African hall of fame with artistic works including a collection of poems titled "Dekkil Taalif." The masterpieces have already been published on CD and videotapes. Hehas also written popular songs, which prove a big, hit, being performed by famous Senegalese artists such as Youssou Ndour.
Present at the awarding ceremony were poets from Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, Guadeloupe, France and host country Senegal. The gathering will run till Saturday.
