A bronze statue commemorating Zheng Pingru, the prototype of the female character in the movie "Lust, Caution" was unveiled on June 6 at Fu Shou Yuan in Shanghai, reproducing the true image of a heroine who has long suffered humiliation to her reputation due to an untrue accusation in China's War of Resistance Against Japan, according to China News Service.

The base of the statue is a tilted cross-shaped structure, with the horizontal background depicting the scene of the attempted assassination of traitor Ding Mocun in the Siberian Fur Store on that particular historic day. By means of a bound figure, the sculptors reproduced the scene in which Zheng was about to die a heroic death.

The movie "Lust, Caution" triggered strong attention to the prototype of Wang Jiazhi, the leading female character in the movie.

Zheng, a woman who sacrificed her life during an attempt to assassinate traitor Ding Mocun became known to all in a short period of time.

As this year marks the 95th anniversary of Zheng's birth, her relatives and friends, and the neighbors at that time, as well as scholars and professors who have studied Zheng's life gathered at Fu Shou Yuan in Shanghai to unveil her memorial statue, and attended a ceremony for the first publication of a new book titled Uncovering Archival Secrets of Leading Female Character in Movie "Lust, Caution" -- A Woman Spy (Zheng's Story). During the event, they jointly recalled Zheng's heroic life in the history of China's War of Resistance Against Japan.

Two years ago, along with the movie came a variety of anecdotal rumors involving "sexual seduction" and "fear of death" among others, humiliating the heroine who sacrificed her life for her motherland in the war. The current key objective in publishing Zheng's Story is to "clear the heroine's name."

After Zheng was arrested, officials of the Japanese puppet regime found and coerced her parents with conditions. Both Zheng Yue, Zheng's father, and her Japanese mother were reluctant to induce their daughter to capitulate, and years later, Zheng Haicheng, Zheng's brother, sacrificed his life in an air combat against Japanese forces in 1944.

The commonly-held opinion among today's society who appraise Zheng's family is as follows: Zheng Yue maintained integrity; Pingru sacrificed her life for her motherland; Haicheng died for a righteous cause; Zheng's mother understood the principles of right and wrong.

Takayuki Yanagisawa, a Japanese friend who came from afar, once said that he hoped from the bottom of his heart that not only will the narration of Pingru's rough experiences serve as a monument to the War of Resistance Against Japan, but that it will also become a new starting point for Chinese-Japanese friendship.

According to information, Yanagisawa has already planned another work to further introduce this Chinese heroine to Japan, in order to promote an everlasting friendship between Chinese and Japanese people.
