Ten children elected as International Child Stars

Xinhua News Agency, along with other media and institutes, selected ten International Child Stars worldwide Nov. 15, 2009 so as to meet the upcoming International Children's Day.

Eight of them come from abroad. They are samba girl Maria Louisa from Brazil, environment protection advocate Jordan Hartman from Australia, Lebanese girl Sahar Carmor, peace-pursuing girl Esha from Afghanistan, tsunami survivors Chen Jian-an from Indonesia and Xi Shani from Sir Lanka.

In addition, Russian Beslan hostage crisis victim Russlan and Ugandan 14-year-old boy Dennis Opaka, who lives with brothers and sisters after their parents were cruelly murdered by the rebels, are also on the list.

These children are elected based on their unique experiences and deep touching stories.

Two Chinese children are elected, 11-year-old hearing challenged kid Liu Danyang from Yichang, Hubei and 14-year-old Naxi Culture promoter He Siqi from Lijiang, Yunnan.

"International Child Star" is initiated by Xinhua News Agency and UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund). Hundreds of the media, both domestic and international agencies, will take part in this event and there will be 24-hour live coverage worldwide.

Nov. 20 is International Children's Day. It has been 20 years since the UN passed the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
