2. Nicosia, Cyprus


Reason for being on the list:

The middle of Nicosia is a UN buffer zone, which divides the city into two parts. The buffer zone is fenced by barbed wires and petrol cans. If you want to pass through the buffer zone, you have to accept the army security check, and then pass the crossroad to get to the other part of the city. The two parts belong to descendants of Greece and Turkey respectively. Traveling in this modern city, you will feel an exotic atmosphere form the East.
