Out of 1.5 million Vietnamese women undergoing abortion every year, 30 percent are in the age bracket of 13-19, local newspaper Saigon Liberation on Friday quoted statistics of Vietnam's Health Ministry.
Some 5 percent of local women became mothers before reaching the age of 18, and 15 percent before the age of 20. Among Vietnamese women contracting sexually transmitted diseases, nearly 2.7 percent are aged below 15.
Their premarital sex engagement at early age plus poor awareness of reproductive health, especially contraception, is among the causes leading to unwanted pregnancies.
Vietnam with population of some 84 million is encouraging local people to use modern contraceptive methods and improving sex education among people, especially the youth.
