Touching moments

Moment 1:

When the woman was found by rescuers, it was clear she had died under a collapsed house. But under her body was a well-protected 3- to 4-month-old baby. The mother had bent down on both knees, keeping her hands on the floor to provide a safe space for her baby. When the baby was pulled clear a cell phone was discovered in his clothing. A text message on the screen read: "My dear baby, if you can survive, do remember that I loved you!"

Moment 2:

When the earthquake happened, a girl was talking on the phone to her boyfriend in Sichuan. They lost contact but 30 minutes later the boy sent the last text message of his life: "I miss you. Let's get married." The boy remains missing but the girl believes he is the bravest guy in the world. "He was still missing me at the last moment of his life," she said.

Moment 3:

Eleven-year-old Zhang Jiwan lost his grandfather and grandmother when the earthquake hit. But he then trekked 12 hours with his 3-year-old sister on his back, until being met by a rescue team.

Moment 4:

7:30am on May 17, beside a collapsed building in Sichuan, 31 Japanese rescuers stood in two rows to mourn for 27-year-old Song Xuemei and her 75-day-old daughter. After battling for 14 hours, they were unable save the life of the young mum and her little daughter.

Moment 5:

A man who lost his wife in the earthquake insisted on carrying her body out of the ruins - bound on his back - and to the mortuary.
