On August 31, Xiamen's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was formally put into operation. From then on, Xiamen's heavy traffic is expected to be relieved greatly.

Xiamen's BRT is constructed as an overhead viaduct that crosses the downtown area, has exlusive BRT line rights, and has no traffic lights along the entire line to ensure smooth and prompt passage.

It is currently the first reported elevated BRT system. The elevated BRT line is different from the special bus routes on the road and it is as suitable for moderate cities as a subway and light railway.
