The UK's Guardian has chosen the best ten buildings of the last decade from around the world. On the list, Bird's Nest, also known as the National Stadium of China, in Beijing ranks sixth.

The last ten years was characterized by speculative economies and impulsive consumption, and inevitably, architecture was involved into it too. Like what Mies van der Rohe said decades ago, "the will of an epoch translated into space".

In fact, such speculative economy and impulsive consumption had started in 1997 with the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Its designer, Frank Garry, became one of the star designers of the decade. The museum defined architectural works in next 10 years as landmarks that become magnets attracting tourists.

Some weekend tour programs carried out by travel agencies at the museum are just to see the building. Now the phenomenon has been acclaimed the "Bilbao Effect" by some British Politicians.
