Fullest moon in 53 years set to light Lantern Festival sky

The moon for this year's Lantern Festival, January 15 on Chinese lunar calendar, will be the biggest of the Year of the Tiger, and will also the fullest moon on Lantern Festival evening since 1957.

It is estimated that the distance from moon to the Earth will be shortest at 6 am on the early morning of January 15 according to the lunar calendar. The distance will be 357,829 km which is nearly 50 thousands kilometers less than the longest distance.

At 38 minutes past 12 am on the early morning of January 16 (lunar calendar), the moon, Earth and Sun will be in a straight line at which time the moon will appear rounder and fuller than usual.

Coincidently, the moon was last this full 53 years ago on Feb. 15, 1957 (January 16 on the Lunar calendar) at 38 past 12 am.
