Shadow puppets
The shadow arts refer to shadow play and shadow play figures. China's shadow art is a special art form which combines folk craft with drama or traditional play.
Audiences can see a shadow puppet play through a piece of white cloth with the shadow of the puppets. The puppets, other props, and scenery are usually leather products made by folk craftsman; thus, they are also called "leather shadows."
The shadow play is one of the oldest dramas in Chinese art history. It has been adored by people for thousands of years, and is widespread throughout the country. The shadow play is very popular in northern China''s rural areas, Sichuan in southwest China, and Hubei and Hunan provinces in central and southern China. There are different schools of shadow plays in different areas. For example, there are the Beijing Shadow, Tangshan Shadow, Shandong Shadow, Shanxi Shadow, Qinghai Shadow, Longdong Shadow, Ningxia Shadow and Sha''anxi Shadow. The Longdong, Shan''anxi and Shanxi Shadows, are called the three major schools of China's Shadow plays.
