The Chinese edition of the biography of a historian of Chinese science and technology, Joseph Needham, titled "The Man Who Loved China: The Fantastic Story of the Eccentric Scientist Who Unlocked the Mysteries of the Middle Kingdom," was recently released in Beijing.
The new book, written by renowned English biographer Simon Winchester, reveals Needham's legendary life based on a great amount of first-hand sources, such as diaries and letters.
Needham (also known as Li Yuese) is a world-renowned biochemist and historian of science and technology. He is the only scientist in England who is both a fellow of the Royal Society and an academician of the British Academy. He is also one of the first foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "Science and Civilization in China," which Needham started writing in 1948, is the world's most influential work on China's history of science and technology.
