And of those 56 ethnic groups, most of them can be found in Southwest China's Yunan province. Also in Yunnan, in the county of Yaoan, some local heritage sites have been receiving some much-needed restoration from local and central governments. Since the area was hit by a 6-point-0 magnitude earthquake in early July, heritage agencies have conducted a full review of local cultural and historical sites.

On Monday, a ceremony was held for the restoration of the Longhua Temple. The project will be jointly operated by the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the Yunnan Provincial Government. It aims to reinforce all the main buildings in the Buddhist complex, which was built in the late Tang Dynasty more than a thousand years ago. Officials say that over the coming year, about 20-million yuan will be spent to restore relic sites in the quake-hit area.
