Famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's latest film 'Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea' will be released in North America with the title 'Ponyo' on August 14 after it grossed more than 153 million US dollars to top the 2008 box office in Japan.
Miyazaki's longtime partner, publisher Walt Disney will deliver the film on over 800 screens, the largest US release ever for a Miyazaki film.

It is reported Disney's animation mogul John Lasseter will host a tribute meeting for Miyazaki next month in Los Angeles to learn more details of the Japanese filmmaker's classics.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale 'The Little Mermaid', the film tells the story of a baby goldfish named Ponyo who longs to be a human, and eventually gets her wish. She runs away from her home in the sea and befriends a five-year-old human boy named Sosuke.

Hayao Miyazaki is widely hailed as a master of animation films. His classic works, including 'My Neighbor Totoro', Oscar-winning 'Spirited Away' and 'Howl's Moving Castle', enjoyed international acclaim outside his home country.

'The Jonas Brothers' member Frankie Jonas and Miley Cyrus' younger sister Noah Cyrus lead the voice cast of 'Ponyo'.
