International trip-hop legend Tricky has touched-down in China and is all set to perform at the first weekendlong InMusic Festival scheduled to kick-off this afternoon at Zhangbei Grassland, two hours’ drive out of Beijing.

Bringing his unique musical fusion of rock and hip hop, high art and pop culture, the UK mix legend is now working on reviving the essence of Chinese culture in his performance.

Despite being prominent in the electronic music industry for nearly 20 years, the festival is Tricky’s first performance in China and also his first trip to the mainland.

“I have only been to Taiwan airport to transfer to Malaysia before, but I guess that does not count as a visit,” he joked.

Tricky said that he was thrilled to be playing in China and was looking forward to performing in the “oriental and mysterious” country which he has heard so much about before. “I was really excited during my whole flight here,” he said.

The news of Tricky’s arrival has created a sensation in the pop-music scene, with many fans planning on traveling to the festival from from various provinces. Tricky said that he was shocked when heard the news.

“I would never expect so many fans in a country that I have never been to,” he said.
Expressing his delighted surprise and gratitude, Tricky said that he would try to be at his absolute best this weekend, performing tracks from his last album Knowle West Boy, released in 2008, as well as some of his best known works.

“Besides, to perform in the place which used to be the capital of the ancient Mongol Empire (1206-1635) is totally wild,” he told the Global Times.

Once discovering that he had a huge fan base in China, Tricky said that he had been given new inspiration to add Chinese elements into his future music and concerts.

“Like wearing Chinese-styled clothing or having some song introductions in Chinese during my concert,” he explained. “I want to bring the culture back home and introduce it to others.”

One of the Chinese elements that Tricky is most interested in is martial arts. Having learnt Chinese boxing for seven years from a Chinese teacher in New York, he said that it would be great to find a martial arts teacher during his visit to China.

“Wherever I travel, I always try to find somebody to teach me something from that country,” he explained. “It is always nice to learn different things from different cultures.”

Born in 1968 in England, Tricky is noted for his dark, rich, layered music and a lyrical spoken style. He had a miserable childhood after his father left and his mother committed suicide. He was brought up by his grandmother who often left him watching old horror movies instead of sending him to school.

According to Tricky, his “crazy upbringing” formed the basis of his music, which has always been a combination of different genres and styles.
