GUANGZHOU: The number of people suffering from lung cancer has grown by 111.85 percent in the past two decades in Guangdong Province, according to a survey.

Commenting on the study carried out by the national anti-cancer association, Professor Wang Siyu of a hospital affiliated to Sun Yat-sun University, said liver cancer was most prevalent in the province, followed by lung cancer.

He said the rapid growth of people suffering from lung cancer was due to smoking and air pollution.

"Those over 40 years old are especially prone to lung cancer, and men are more susceptible than women," Wang said.

"Many people are not aware of the symptoms in its early stage, and therefore do not seek treatment."

He said those suffering from a persistent cough with blood in the phlegm should seek medical treatment immediately.

Li Liuning, a doctor with the Guangdong Hospital of Chinese Medicines, said people should keep a balanced diet and those who live in newly decorated houses should also be on guard against radioactive substances.

"They should also make sure their homes are well ventilated," he said.

Those who work in polluting industries such as foundries, rubber production, printing, welding, painting, pesticide production and oil refineries should take good protective measures to avoid inhaling poisonous substances, Li said.
