Inhabitants of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, the second biggest city in Brazil, were mobilized Sunday to combat dengue which had already killed dozens of people this year.
A total of 2,000 people from 72 communities took part in the initiative which is part of the local government's strategy to fight the plague, reported the official Agencia Brasil.
In the community of Curupati, in the district of Jacarepagua, about 30 volunteers inspected houses, talked with inhabitants and took away wastes from streets.
"We have been collecting carafes, cups, all kinds of recipients where mosquitoes could reproduce," said Luiz Ventura, a volunteer who took part in the initiative.
According to the local government, this initiative to mobilize inhabitants will last permanently.
The death toll from dengue in Rio de Janeiro state rose to 67, and more than 120,000 people have suffered from the disease since the beginning of the year, according to Brazil's health authorities. Source: Xinhua
