Acute diarrhea has spread to Vietnam's two northern provinces of Quang Ninh and Thai Nguyen, raising the total number of affected localities in the country to 14 since early March.
In Quang Ninh, two acute diarrhea sufferers were hospitalized on April 6. Initial tests showed that they were infected with cholera, local newspaper Pioneer Wednesday quoted the provincial Department of Health as reporting.
Now, Vietnam's National Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute is testing their specimens to give final results.
In Thai Nguyen, a 27-year-old woman, admitted to the hospital on April 7, was initially tested positive to cholera virus.
Earlier, nearly 500 people in 12 northern cities and provinces were infected with acute diarrhea, of whom over 100 contracted cholera. The patients are from the capital of Hanoi, Hai Phong city and the 10 provinces of Ha Tay, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Thanh Hoa, Phu Tho, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong and Ninh Binh, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Health.
