An outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) at a Birmingham school which hit 30 schoolgirls is being investigated, according to a report by BBC on Wednesday.

Pupils at Birchfield Independent School for Girls were tested after a pupil and one of their relatives were diagnosed with the disease, the report said.

A pupil at the school contracted TB last summer and was successfully treated, but another family member later became ill. The decision to test pupils at the school was taken in February, according to the report.

Thirty girls at the school have tested positive for TB and the patients were being treated at the Birmingham Chest Clinic and the Birmingham Children's Hospital, Andrew Rouse, a consultant in public health, said.

The girls at the school which provides education for girls aged between 11 and 16, who have the disease, will undergo six antibiotic treatments.

The school confirmed the outbreak but has refused to comment further.
