The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Friday called on Latin American authorities to intensify their public policies on AIDS prevention.

The governments in Latin America should be brave enough to workout policies in time, Nils Kastberg, UNICEF's regional director in Latin America and the Caribbean, told Xinhua.

"They are (preventive) policies that do not win votes, but they do win lives," Kastberg said.

The lack of initial actions by the health authorities in Latin America has been a cause for AIDS spreading in the region, Kastberg said.

The epidemic and its infection have been a taboo in the region, which has delayed the prevention campaign, Kastberg said, noting most governments in Latin America have failed to assure a universal coverage on prevention, Kastberg said.

Kastberg will attend the 17th World Conference on AIDS scheduled for Aug. 3-8 in this Mexican capital.

The conference, with Universal Action Now as its theme, is expected to draw about 25,000 participants from across the world. Mexican President Felipe Calderon will attend the opening ceremony.
