Chicago approved the ban on sale of baby bottles and sippy cups manufactured with a chemical, potentially harmful to infants.
The ban was approved by the Chicago City Council Wednesd ay, making Chacago the first U.S. city to adopt such a measure.
Tests of laboratory animals have linked the chemical, widely-known as bisphenol A.(BPA), to breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and neurological disorders.
The ban will take effect January 21, 2010.
"This is an important step in a landmark consumer protection initiative. This legislation will protect Chicago's children and send a clear message to other jurisdictions considering similar legislation," said Alderman Manny Flores, co-sponsor of the measure.
