China picks first 10 Famous Historical and Cultural Streets
|
The first batch of "China's Famous Historical and Cultural Streets" was formally announced on June 11 at Confucius Temple and Imperial College in Beijing.
The ten "Famous Streets" are Guozijian Street in Beijing, South Avenue in Pingyao County, Central Avenue in Harbin, Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, Tunxi Old Street in Huangshan, Three Lanes and Seven Valleys in Fuzhou, Badaguan in Qingdao, Zhaode Ancient Street in Qingzhou, Qilou Old Street in Haikou, and Bakuo Street in Lhasa.
As an integral part of famous historical and cultural cities, historical and cultural areas are not only a special type of cultural heritage, but are also places where the general public lives their daily lives.
To introduce China's Famous Historical and Cultural Streets to the Chinese people and the world step by step, an activity jointly sponsored by organizations including the China Cultural Daily and the Society for the Chinese Culture Promotion Society was launched in July 2008. Over 200 street blocks participated in the activity of "Selection, Introduction and Promotion of China's Famous Historical and Cultural Streets", which has been approved by the Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
Six major criteria were adopted to evaluate participating streets - the street's historical factor, cultural factor, how well it has been preserved, its economic and cultural vitality, its social visibility, and its protection and management. Up to now, more than 1.40 million votes have been collected from the general public in total. The Secretary-General of the China Society of Cultural Heritage Luo Zhewen and the Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies Wang Jinghui served as the committee chairmen for the activity.
