The Three Gorges Dam successfully proved itself again by holding back the flood peak in the Yangtze River on July 28.
The Three Gorges Dam, which is located in the Yichang city, central China's Hubei province, was tested for the second time in a month on yesterday morning when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River at a maximum flow rate of 56,000 cubic meters per second at 8 a.m.
The dam used eight spillway deep holes and a row of floating holes to sluice down floods and withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.
The water level in the reservoir area rose to 158 meters on July 28, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.
