Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met here Friday with Antonio Oliveira Guterres, the United Nations high commissioner for refugees.

Dai hailed the cooperation between the Chinese government and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, urging all nations to settle disputes through peaceful means.

He also urged all nations to realize common development so as to eliminate the refugee issue.

He appealed to all concerned parties to make equal efforts in preventing the refugee issue and in offering aid and protection to refugees.

Dai also urged the developed world to give more assistance to the developing world, under the principle of international unity and shared responsibility.

Guterres praised China's disaster-relief efforts after the recent mudslides in several provinces.

He also praised China's role in international affairs, including in refugee issues.

He agreed with Dai and vowed to step up cooperation with China.

Guterres is in China for his second visit since he took office in 2005.
