Latvian President Valdis Zatlers said on Tuesday in Belgrade that he had come to the Serbian capital to initiate sustainable economic cooperation between his Baltic state and Serbia, according to a Serbian government press release.
Zatlers, attending the Latvia Business Forum at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, said the recent establishment of direct flights between Riga and Belgrade on the Latvian airline 'Air Baltic' in May of this year was part of a wider campaign to improve contact between business-people of the two countries and among their respective citizens.
"Serbia and Latvia are located in geographically very different areas, which makes it easier for them to cooperate better with other countries," said Zatlers.
The Latvian president suggested that close cooperation in the IT sector had potential, as distance was not a factor.
"Serbia is on its path to EU membership, which is a reason more for the two countries to come closer," said Zatlers. "Good opportunities should be used for doing good business but differences between various countries and regions must also be kept in mind."
