The men's singles fourth seed Chen Jin from China knocked out first round opponent Ville Lang of Finland in straight sets at the Badminton World Championships on Tuesday.

Chen met some challenges from the world 53rd shuttler in the middle of the first set, but managed to win it 21-14.

When the 24-year-old Chen led the second game in 11-6, Lang suffered a shoe-broken incident and had to change his shoes. Then the game finished with the same scoreline as the first one.

"After all, it's the first match of the competition. What I was trying to do was just adjusting to the court conditions such as the light and the wind," said Chen who finished second behind teammate Lin Dan at last year's World Championships.

Chen refused to admit that he was lucky to be drawn in the second half as bignames Lee Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat as well as his teammates Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai are all in the first half.

"In the men's singles, whatever the draw is, the competition is tough," said Chen. "There are still Simon Santoso and Peter Gade in my half. I have to focus on each match."
