A Communist Party of China (CPC) senior official met in Beijing on Friday with Patrick Devedjian, general secretary of France's Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), with the two agreeing to step up cooperation between the respective parties.

Wang Jiarui, head of the CPC Central Committee international department, spoke highly of the UMP's donation campaign for the southwest Sichuan Province after it suffered a strong earthquake on May 12.

He voiced the CPC's commitment to cooperate with the UMP to further promote their friendship and work to bring the Sino-France comprehensive and strategic partnership to a higher level.

Wang expressed hope the UMP could continue to give full play to its influence to help foster ties between the two nations.

Devedjian highlighted the important role their party relations played to expand the mutual understanding between the two peoples, expressing UMP's willingness to establish frequent exchange mechanisms with the CPC and make new contributions to strengthen ties between the parties and nations.

They also spoke on issues such as the financial crisis and rural development.
