Gavin: So what is the idea behind this window with a series of odd shapes throughout it?

Hu: This is the ornamental perforated window. It is a special style of Chinese traditional architecture, particularly relevant in the classic Chinese garden. The "odd shape" is a pattern called crack, and it looks like chapped ice or glass. It's a popular window for gardens. It is different from the picture window that is designed to have a view of both sides, making the scenery inside like a picture (window frame). This windows function is to obstruct the outside view of the wall. The existence of this window is not only good for ventilation, but also stops the unimpeded line of sight. The inside and outside spaces are obstructed from each other while also filter into each other, making insufficiency into excessiveness and excessiveness to insufficiency. Playing with the insufficiency and excessiveness is a unique traditional interest.
