"When various constituents of Asian media get together, they can be a more potent medium than the Singapore or Bangkok edition of some London- or Paris-edited, Washington-inspired, Seattle-centric newspaper," said Ravindra Kumar, editor of the Statesman in India.
And the digital era is providing new opportunities for Asian media.
"Asian media is seeing more chances for development in the current communication revolution," said Huang Wei, deputy editor-in-chief of English language publication Beijing Review.
China''s 130 million netizens spend an average of 16.5 hours per week online, which exceeds the average time spent surfing the Internet in many developed countries.
"Swift communication and news reporting has undoubtedly brought new opportunities to Asian media," Huang said.
Felix Soh, deputy editor of Singapore''s the Straits Times, said Asian media needs to be more proactive, pool resources and break new ground in mainstream as well as digital media if it''s to play a leading role in global integration.
He said the media in Asia should master new technology.
"The Internet will give Asian media a leg up over their Western counterparts," said Soh.
"The Internet is like the fine art of judo. You may be weaker than your opponent, but by developing and adopting the right skills at the right time, you can overthrow a Goliath," said Soh.
