ABSTRACT OF PAPER ON THE “ROLE OF EAST ASIA MEDIA IN PROMOTING 10+3 CO-OPERATION”
By Yong Soo Heong Editor-in-Chief, BERNAMA Time has perhaps come for the 10+3 countries in East Asia to mobilise their resources to promote co-operation in the region. At present, reporting on this matter is done on a disparate basis. It would be a good idea to establish a news centre or hub which can emphasise on the mechanics of East Asian co-operation as well as other positive efforts.
Over time, this could perhaps be the forerunner of the emergence of a news agency or network that could help carry a stronger and more coherent voice for East Asia.
This could also help correct the certain instances of imbalanced reporting that had shown East Asia in poor light.
In recent years, news organisations and tv networks in Asean, China, Japan and South Korea have begun to show very accurate, credible and balanced reporting. If these resources and skills could be harnessed to form one strong and independent entity with journalists based in key cities around the world, perhaps there could be a way out for the emergence of a louder East Asian voice eventually.
