Role of Media from East Asian Countries in Promoting 10+3 Cooperation

By James Kon Vee Ming,
Assistant News Desk Editor,
Borneo Bulletin, Brunei

First of all, I would like to congratulate the People’s Daily of China for successfully organizing such a huge media event.

I would also like to convey my gratitude to the organizer for inviting our newspaper Borneo Bulletin of Brunei Darussalam to participate in the first 10+3 media cooperation forum.

Some 1.5 Billion people live in the East Asian Region, making it one of the largest markets in the world. The benefits and economic potentials for the Free Trade Area of 10+3 are unquestionably enormous.

With that in mind, mass media can play an important role in providing the flow of information in promoting the aspiration of FTA, cultural exchange and bridging the geographical gap of the countries.

Mass Media including Newspaper, Television, Magazines, radio, internet linked devices and the latest Internet are some of the world’s most powerful tool of communication. Undoubtedly, it also could be an immense instrument that aid in promoting the mutual understanding, and cultural enrichment between the people within ASEAN, China, Japan and Korea in the 10+3 cooperation.

This can be done through media exchange programmes such as this media cooperation forum, where ideas and opinions can be discussed and shared amongst us and then in turn will spread to the various countries affected and the public at large.

Media exchange programmes are essential in promoting the cultural enrichment among the 10+3 countries in order to help bridge the people to people understanding and relation.

Constant communication between Media agencies from ASEAN member countries with China, Korea and Japan can be one of the main engines in eliminating many misunderstanding if any arises, as well as promoting the 10+3 cooperation in each respective country.

This is made easier given the technological leaps that has been achieved over the decades and even over the pass few years in regards to connectivity.

Links in the flow of information between 10+3 countries should be set up for media agencies, respective countries and the general public to retrieve invaluable information on daily occurrence of matter concerning 10+3 cooperation.

The mass media are not just made up of the mode of information provider but the people working to get the information itself. Perhaps it should start from the bottom up, with media personnel practicing basic human decency and courtesy towards their subjects (what their report is on).

They must present reports that are factual and avoid sensationalism of event that may result in negatively affecting the 10+3. Media agencies in each respective country could also provide updates information on the drive for 10+3 cooperation.

Such information can include an explanation of what 10+3 is and information about the countries involved, culturally, socially, economically and politically and aim for transparency.

Ultimately, the most important role the media can play is to be supportive and positive of 10 + 3.

Thank You.
