Taekwondo world champion gazes at first gold for Thailand

Taekwondo world champion Rapatkorn Prasopsuk in women's heavyweight category will probably claim the first gold for host Thailand on Thursday at the 24th Universiade.

Prasopsuk, who won last year's World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships (WTF), said here Tuesday that she has been ready to fight for her country.

"I'm confident in getting the gold," Rapatkorn told Xinhua during the break of her training session.

Nataphol Teepsuwan, secretary general of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, said he was also "pretty confident."

He said the Thai taekwondo delegation has set its goal at the Universiade to claim one gold, despite the players are quite competitive in the women's 47kg, 51kg and over 72kg categories.

"We have strong opponents from China and South Korea," he said.

Chinese player Wang Mengli will compete in the over 72kg category and may meet determined Prasopsuk. Wang's coach Chen Liang didn't comment on her expectation.

"I don't want to give any pressure to my player," Chen said, adding that Wang would try her best.
