G8 science ministers deem science, technology key to sustainable development

Science and technology ministers from the Group of Eight (G8) on Sunday stressed that science and technology is an important key to sustainable development worldwide.

And it is of great importance to promote science and technology cooperation based on international collaboration, said Fumio Kishida, Japan's state minister in charge of science and technology policy, in the chair's summary at the conclusion of theG8 science ministers meeting.

Recognizing the important role of new and innovative technologies in building a low carbon society, the ministers maintained that international research and development collaboration should be promoted on all energy alternatives in order to develop new and sustainable energy solutions with innovative technologies such as fusion energy and Carbon Capture and Storage.

The advancement of science and technology in developing countries is essential for their sustainable development and it is important to promote science and technology cooperation between developed and developing countries, said Kishida.

On cooperation in research and development resources, Kishida said that it should be boosted through the exchange of relevant information by allowing other countries access to research facilities and sharing information on plans to construct new research facilities.

The G8 science ministers gathered Sunday in Nago city of Okinawa Prefecture to confer on three themes: approaches to the solution of global issues through international cooperation, science and technology cooperation with African countries and other developing countries, and cooperation in research and development resources.

The one-day session is held in the run-up to the G8 summit scheduled for July 7-9 at the Toyako (Lake Toya) resort area in Hakkaido.
