Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua on Wednesday urged the G8 nations to fulfill the commitments made to Africa in the past few years.

The president made the call to the outgoing Ambassador of the United States to Nigeria John Campbell at the State House.

A statement from the State House quoted the president as saying that "we appreciate your leadership role in the G8 and hope you will continue to ensure that members fulfill their commitments to Africa, especially since 2005."

He assured the ambassador that Nigeria would continue to shoulder its traditional responsibility of ensuring peace, democracy and social justice in Africa.

While expressing appreciation to the ambassador for offering to support Nigeria's efforts, he said Nigeria would continue to explore ways of extending and expanding the cordial relations with the US.

Earlier, Campbell had described Nigeria as "indispensable" to Africa.

He described Nigeria as a giant of the continent with huge international responsibilities thrust on her and pledged the U.S. assistance to Nigeria in the pursuit of peace, democracy and development in the country and in Africa.
