Chinese men's duo Wu Penggen/Xu Linyin and women's pair Xue Chen/Zhang Xi will face off against their rivals in day two of the Beijing beach volleyball tournamant Sunday following the victory of 1st-seeded Tian Jia/Wang Jie Saturday.
Wu/Xu, placed fifth on the qualification list, will meet lower ranked Austrian Florian Gosch/Alexander Horst Sunday morning.
Wu/Xu, the top men's duo, won five silvers and two bronzes on the FIVB World Tour, with Xu being named the most improved player in 2007.
Chinese women's tandem Xue/Zhang will make their first appearance by taking on 16-seeded Efthalia Koutroumanidou/Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece.
The two young Chinese girls, who bagged four FIVB World Tour gold medals in 2006-2008 period, will both go all out in their first Olympic journey.
Chinese head coach Miao Zhihong has said that they didn't set any target for the Olympics and the important thing was how the players could give full play to their abilities and techniques.
The second day of the tournament will also see a clash between reigning Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh of the United States and Japan's Chiaki Kusuhara/Mika Teru Saiki.
The U.S. pair have won 75 of their last 76 international beach volleyball matches since the end of the 2006 season.
The beach volleyball preliminaries run through Aug. 9 to 14, followed by eliminatination match until Aug. 22. Top teams from each pool and two best third-placed teams advance to the top 16.
The remaining four third-placed teams play two playoffs to determine the other two berths in top 16.
