15:19, August 09, 2008

Some Latin American countries hailed on Friday the inaugural ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Peruvian President Alan Garcia said the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics was "spectacular, superb and amazing, "after watching the event at the Chinese embassy in Peru.

The ceremony showed a country with a huge population and ancient civilization, Garcia said, adding that "Peru and its people should get inside that spirit, to absorb that unbendable soul."

"The images we see at TV are amazing. I am especially amazed by the Olympic stadium. It is a real picture of what China is," said the president.

"It has been a successful inauguration," Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo said while watching the ceremony at the Chinese embassy in Cuba. Cuba TV channel Tele-Rebelde broadcast the inaugural ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday.

Cubans were amazed by the originality, creativity, coloring and technology of the opening ceremony of the Games, and almost all who saw the show said it was spectacular.

Brazilian Communist Party said in a statement that the Beijing Games "attract the attention and interest not only of sports fans, but of all the people around the world, who are captivated by the beauty and power of the show."

"The 29th Olympic Games show the Chinese people's talent, greatness and the organization capabilities, which amaze the world one more time." the statement said.

Raul Alcaino, mayor of the Chilean city of Santiafo, said: "We have seen one of the most majestic ceremonies in the world...China has set a great example of how to organize an inauguration ceremony where it combined the technology and the human elements, it was a show that amazed and excited the whole world."

Mexican law professor Alejandro del Palacio told Xinhua: "The ceremony was very beautiful, it was a good teaching of the ancient Chinese culture and a proof of the greatness of Chinese people in all senses."

Mexican swimming coach Nelson Vargas said the inaugural ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing was a huge show of technology he had ever seen.

"I have attended 10 Olympic Games inaugurations and have never seen an opening with such a display of technology before. It was impressive. I sincerely congratulate the Chinese people who have always been highly respected by Mexicans," Vargas said.

"This is wonderful, the best gift, I can't ask for more," said the mother of Uruguayan flag bearer Alejandro Foglia, referring to the moment his son walked by the runway at the inaugural ceremony.
