The gold medal in men's cycling road race was belonging to the team, Spain's first gold medal winner Samuel Sanchez said on Saturday.
"It is the honor of all of us," said the 30-year-old Spaniard in the mixed zone, who rode to the final at a time of 6 hours 23 minutes 49 seconds on the first competing day of Beijing Olympics, which was inaugurated yesterday evening.
A total of five Spanish riders participated in the men's road race, including this year's Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, Tour de France champion in 2007 Alberto Contador, San Sebastian champion Alejandro Valverde and world champion Oscar Freire.
The road race winner said it was incredible for him to snatch a gold medal. "The truth is that it's like a dream, I can't believe it. And I couldn't believe I can take the gold when I arrived in the Olympic Village," said Sanchez.
Sanchez also said his team was strong and was with much experience. "The course was difficult, the heat and humidity was extreme, so we had to work as hard as we could, and with the experience, the team helped me to climb up to the podium," he said. Source:Xinhua |
