Chinese windsurfer Yin Jian opened the RS:X women with a bang at Olympic sailing here on Monday, leading all the way through the two races.
Yin Jian stole the show of the 27-strong fleet in the first race. She took the lead in every mark and finished first with a 20-second lead.
She maintained her dominance in the second race and first crossed the finishing line, enlarging the lead to 29 seconds to top the overall fleet.
She was followed by Australian veteran sailboarder Jessica Crisp and Bryony Shaw from Britain.
"She is sailing great. Fantastic. She is definitely the one to make. She is a fabulous competitor," said the 38-year-old Crisp on Yin Jian's performance.
Yin Jian's comment on herself was quite low-profile. "It was just two races, still a long way to go," said a quiet Yin, 29, silver medalist in 2004 Athens.
"For every race I will fight, whether the wind or current is in my favor," added Yin, one of China's medal favorites among the 18-sailor team.
Chinese sailing team leader Yao Xinpei was satisfied with Yin's performance today.
"She displayed her advantage quite well today. I believe she will inspire other Chinese sailors to do their best in other races," said Yao after a telephone interview.
China's Wang Aichen also led the 35-strong RS:X men's competition in the first three marks and sailed its way to the third in the overall fleet, finishing 2nd and 8th in two races. Shahar Zubari from Israel and Chan King Yin from Hong Kong China took 1st and 2nd.
Aside from the Olympic racing debut of the women's and men's RS:X sailboard, 470 women's competition had two leaders of the overall fleet after two races with Marcelien de Koning and Lobke Berkhout from Netherlands and Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson from Australia both snatching four points. Nicolas Charbonnier and Olivier Bausset from France topped the leader board of the 470 men's competition.
In Yngling class, Britain's Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson placed first after six races on the third successive day. The defending champion Ben Ainslie finally raced back to lead the Finn fleet.
After six races, Australian 49er crew Nathan Outteridge and Ben Austin, the current world champions, led the fleet despite their 15th place in Race 1.
Tomorrow will see the opening of Laser and Laser Radial competition on Fushan bay along with two more races for women and men's RS:X and 470 classes.
