Everyone had thought of that Usain Bolt might win the gold medal with Tyson Gay's disqualification, but seldom had imagined he refreshed his own world record even by slowing down before the finishing line and glancing right and left.
Crouching at the stopwatch reading 9.69 seconds, Usain Bolt from Jamaica sliced the world record of men's 100 meters sprint by 0.03 seconds within 76 days at the Beijing Olympic Games on Saturday.
The Jamaican, with five days left to turn 22, didn't raise the head in his first ten paces and shook off the rest in the middle of the race. He looked around before touching the line, only to find no one else, then he slowed down to celebrate.
All other seven runners leaned their bodies forward at the finish, yet Bolt sprinted straight.
Showing his golden shoes marked "UGO 100m Beijing", Bolt relaxed. No one has an idea how fast he could run if he did not slowing down at the finish.
"I never know I run so fast. I came to be a champion." Bolt said, "I was relaxant and always relaxant."
Bolt kept running. On May 3, he ran 9.76, June 1, 9.72.
"The track is pretty good. I'm so proud of my country for winning the first gold medal for Jamaica. I know the whole Jamaica would be going for crazy." the 1.96-meter-high sprinter said.
Herbert Elliott, a medical personnel of Jamaican team, said the Jamaican was "born to be sprinter" and sprint is part of his "heart and soul".
"It's just a matter of time for him (Bolt) to create a faster record and I believe he is a phenomenal athlete and clean athlete." said Richard Thompson from Trinidad and Tobago who finished in 9.89 seconds to get the silver medal.
"He has been running very well since he was very young. I feel pretty good to be part of the history and run beside with him, I don't think there is or anyway or anyone could have beaten him with a run like that today." Thompson said.
