Chinese president meets Japanese prime minister

Chinese President Hu Jintao met Friday with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who is here to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and other activities.

State leaders, celebrities and athletes are here to celebrate the opening of the Beijing Olympics, which embodies unity, friendship and peace, Hu said in the meeting.

"I wish to share the exciting time with you, Mr. prime minister," Hu said.

The Chinese president expressed gratitude for the support from the Japanese government and people in the course of Olympic preparations.

"I wish the Japanese athletes can score good results at the Olympics," Hu said.

Fukuda extended the Japanese people's congratulations to the Chinese for hosting the grand Olympic Games. "I'm extremely glad to share the glorious time with President Hu," he said.

"The Olympics are a festive gathering of various nations and different cultures," Fukuda said.
