HAIKOU: More than 6,000 people will be relocated from the island province of Hainan to make way for a new space launch center, officials have said.
Yan Zheng, mayor of Wenchang, said at a meeting yesterday that 1,200 hectares will be needed for the project.
The city's Party chief Xie Mingzhong promised all issues concerning those to be resettled, such as employment, medical care and education, will be properly handled.
The majority of residents to be relocated are from the Longlou and Dongjiao townships in Wenchang, a sparsely populated area of Hainan.
A work detachment, comprising 19 sub-groups, has been set up to take care of all affairs regarding land acquisition, Xie said.
Exact details of the resettlement plan have yet to be finalized, he said.
Xie said the launch center will be completed in 2012 and put into operation the following year.
According to a plan published last month and approved by both the State Council and Central Military Commission, the site will be mostly used for launching synchronous satellites, heavy satellites, deep space probe satellites and space stations.
The plan also includes the construction of a space theme park costing 7 billion yuan ($930 million) and occupying 407 hectares near the launch center, which will provide jobs for the displaced residents.
China has three existing satellite launch centers in Gansu, Shanxi and Sichuan provinces.
