Twenty-five-year-old college graduate owns a 3-story, 600-square meter European-style villa The 3-story, detached, European-style villa measures 600 square meters in size, and comes with its own swimming pool and large garden. It has a large 50-square meter living room, 30 -square meter luxury master bedroom, magnificently decorated study, dining room, gym, central air conditioning, satellite TV, rear projection TV, massage bathtub ... everything one could possibly want.

I could not believe my own eyes, and thought I had walked into the high-end villa area of Beijing or Shanghai, but this was, in fact, an average villa in the "Farmers' Residential Area" in Huaxi Village of Jiangyin City in Jiangsu Province. It belongs to a 25-year-old college graduate named Mei Zhenhua.

Mei was born and raised in the village. In July 2004, he graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology. That same year, he was accepted into a postgraduate program, and simultaneously signed a working contract with the Shanghai Bao Steel Group but he gave up both these opportunities and decided to return to Huaxi Village to work. Since he had majored in metallurgic casting, after his return, Mei was first appointed as the assistant general manager of Jiangyin Huaxi Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. Then in July 2005, he was transferred to the Huaxi Stainless Steel Co. Ltd., and appointed deputy general manager, in charge of technology and equipment. He said, "Huaxi Village is a place where one can achieve great success and I have found a place to display my abilities."

Large items such as houses and cars are distributed in a uniformed way"Is this villa yours or does it belong to your parents?" I said. "It's mine! My parents have their own villa, but theirs is Huaxi's first-generation villa, not as good as mine," Mei said. His parents live in a "carriage villa" which is similar to an attached villa in the city.

"How much does it cost, how can you afford it?" I said.

"You don't have to pay for it, it is distributed by the village. The construction and decoration are uniformly designed by the village, and also paid for by the village. When I moved in, I only had to buy some furniture and home appliances. To tell the truth, the furniture and home appliances cost several hundred thousand yuan and were paid for by my parents," Mei said. "I didn't expect that I could have a villa so soon, but several of the college graduates who returned to the village with me also got their own villas, some were even better than mine. On the one hand, this shows the rapid economic development of the village, on the other, it shows how much the village values talent. We have to work even harder now!" he explained.
Mei continued, "In Huaxi Village Central, large items such as houses and cars are distributed in a uniformed way. At present, nearly everyone in Huaxi Village Central lives in a villa, and every household has a car. Earlier this year, the village gave me a Volkswagen Bora."

Many villagers' annual incomes exceed 1 million yuan. As for his income, Mei said, "I came back in July, 2004 and my monthly salary was 850 yuan, but I received a year-end bonus of 70,000 yuan that year. Of course, most of that bonus was converted into shares in line with the distribution regime of the village. Afterwards, my income included a monthly salary, year-end bonus and dividends. The longer you worked, the more you earned. Nowadays, many villagers' annual incomes exceed 1 million yuan."

"Over 10 graduates like me have returned to the village over the past two years, and many of them graduated from renowned universities. Some returning students were even accompanied by their boyfriends or girlfriends, which in essence means that Huaxi "earned" one more college graduate. The village places great importance on graduates, and almost all have been appointed as senior managers. This also puts a lot of pressure on us and forces us to do well. Generally speaking, we are all outstanding and doing a good job," Mei added. Standing by his large bay window, he pointed at a nearby villa and said that a girl who graduated from Nanjing University lived there. Her boyfriend, now naturally her husband, accompanied her to Huaxi Village. "The common feeling amongst us college graduates returning to the village is that Huaxi has a great future and we all will have a promising career," Mei said.
