On August 26, 1980, the 15th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the 5th National People's Congress decided to ratify the proposal by the State Council on the establishment of special economic zones in China.

on October 7, 1980, the State Council gave the official written reply to the establishment of Xiamen Special Economic Zone.

On October 15, 1981, after over one year of preparation, Xiamen Special Economic Zone broke ground and began construction in Huli export processing zone.

In the 30 years of reform and opening up Xiamen's economic and social development made spectacular and historic achievements.

Xiamen Special Economic Zone has expanded from 2.5 square kilometers in Huli to include the whole Xiamen Island, which covers 135 square kilometers.

The GDP of the City of Xiamen has increased from 741 million yuan in 1981 to 138.78 billion yuan in 2007, after taking into account the permanent population, the GDP per capita reached over 57,000 yuan.

The city's built-up area has expanded from less than 20 square kilometers in 1981 to 180 square kilometers in 2007, making Xiamen an important regional hub in the southeast coast of China.
