Wudang Mountain, located near Shiyan city in north western Hubei Province, is more than just a famous scenic spot. Wudangshan is the home of internal martial arts and a spiritual centre for Chinas native religion, Daoism. It's a place where harmony with nature is a way of life, where buildings are molded to fit their surroundings and where the movements of martial art practitioners mimic nature. Since my time studying taiji chuan in Scotland, I had wanted to go there.

A local carries supplies back home. It's almost Chinese New Year 2007 and I have a month off from my Chinese language classes. My American friend Evan and I decide to make the long awaited trip to Hubei Province to visit Wudang. First on the list is, quickly book tickets before they are sold out in the New Year rush. Much to my pleasure the only tickets left are soft sleeper and that means 18 hours of relative comfort, a good start! However the journey is a long, hungry one where we are persuaded to try the delicacy of pig trotter for the first time… and it will be the last.
