Among children between seven and eighteen years old in Chinese mainland cities, for every 100 boys, twelve are overweight and five are considered "fat." For every 100 girls, seven are overweight and three are considered "fat." The rate of obesity has increased rapidly in recent years, but there has also been a decline in the physical fitness of students.
Experts have pointed out that the main reason for people eating large amounts of protein, foreign fast food, sugary carbonated beverages with sugar and carbonic acid, and larger amounts of sweetmeat is that people have a misunderstanding of obesity and weight loss.
The consumption of meat in China substantially increased from 1960s to 1990s, and the consumption of cereals and vegetables has been on a downward trend. This indicates that people are consuming more protein.
School workloads are too heavy for children, and so children lack time to do physical exercise and get enough sleep. Research shows that if one sleeps less than six hours each night, the incidence of obesity will increase significantly. The stress of schoolwork and other psychological issues affect appetite, and will eventually lead to problems with fat and nutrient intake. In addition, genetic background, family dietary habits, and family life style, are also influencing factors.
