A young Special Olympics sprinter fell into a fit shortly after competition Tuesday and is now in safe condition after receiving emergency treatment at a local hospital.
The 13-year-old Christine Rhabmn from Belize in central America fell down in a swoon after she finished the 200m race on the Special Olympic track. On-site medical staff immediately took her to the Children's Hospital affiliated to Fudan University.
Christine regained consciousness and breathed normally half an hour later after she inhaled oxygen, and remained at the hospital for further monitoring of the cardiograph.
Liu Fang, an internist at the hospital, said Christine suffered from congenital heart disease. A sudden, energetic physical exercise might led to insufficient supply of oxygen to her brain.
Christine's coach said the girl caught a cold as the mercury dropped sharply after Shanghai was hit by Typhoon Krosa.
The hospital is among those designated hospitals by the Organizing Committee of Special Olympics to ensure that athletes can get timely treatment once they fall ill.
