MANILA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III on Friday appointed Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel Roxas II as the new Interior and Local Government Secretary.

Roxas replaces Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash two weeks ago.

Aquino also named Cavite Representative Joseph Emilio Abaya as replacement of Roxas at the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

In appointing Roxas, Aquino said he needs someone who will carry on the work of Robredo and uphold good governance.

"I trust him. Whatever will happen, I know that (Roxas) will carry on the fight and will not fail us," said Aquino.

He also urged the Filipinos to support his two new appointees.
