UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday called on Sudan and South Sudan to finalize and implement their agreement on oil and financial arrangement in order to produce and transport oil as soon as possible.
In a presidential statement issued here by the Council, the 15- member Security Council encouraged Sudan and South Sudan "swiftly finalize the details and signing of the agreement and move forward with transparent implementation of the agreement, in order for oil production and transportation to resume as soon as possible."
On August 4, the two countries agreed on an oil agreement and financial arrangement related to the export of oil from South Sudan through Sudan to Port Sudan.
Concerning the situation in Abyei area, the Council called on the government of Sudan to redeploy the Sudanese oil police from Abyei without preconditions. It also asked the two countries to reach agreement on establishment of an Abyei area administration, council and police service without further delay and to refrain from unilateral actions in this regard.
According to the statement, the Council called on the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-northern sector (SPLM-N) to "expedite the unhindered delivery" of humanitarian assistance to affected civilian population in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states in accordance with the tripartite plan proposed by the UN, AU and League of Arab States.
The Security Council commended the African Union institutions for its constructive leadership in the negotiation process between Sudan and South Sudan.
It supported the convening by the AU High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) of "a round of interactions with the parties, including a summit meeting of the two president, to enable them to reach the necessary agreements on all outstanding issues", said the statement.
